Today was one of my favorite days in beekeeping... New hive installations!  In the spring if you are adding hives or replacing dead ones you have to get some packages.  A package in bee-speak is a box full of bees!  Shout out to Billy C of New England Apiaries who hauled our bees up from Georgia for us. I went out to New England Apiaries this morning and stood in line with a bunch of other beekeepers and picked up a few packages of new bees for the Martin Hives 2021 season.  

The packages were a new style this year, easier to carry, easier to open and easier to retrieve her royal highness the Queen!  She is right inside that little wooden box in the photo below.  

My better-beekeeping-half had to work today (shout out to those of you unafraid who fearlessly get the tattoo every day!) so I was on my own in the beeyard today.  It's tough to dump bees out of packages and take pictures so you'll have to take my word for it when I say it was glorious! 

Once I had the bees out of the package and into the hive, I hung out with them for a bit.  Install day is my favorite because since the bees do not have an established home, they're super docile and way less likely to sting.  So it's a great day to bee more handsy with these ladies.  (Sometimes I can't believe the things I write.)  It was funny, though, right? 

Now that the new hives have been installed we wait three days and check again to see if the Queen has been released from her cage yet by her loyal subjects.  

What?
Experts agree that scheduling a licensed HVAC contractor every spring for thorough inspection & maintenance of your A/C system is one of the best things you can do.

Why?
A poorly maintained and/or inefficient A/C unit could be costing you huge amounts of money and could prove to be a safety risk.

How?
You should trim any plants, shrubs, or trees around the exterior A/C unit(s) if they are near or coming in contact with it. We highly recommend that annual service of the mechanical components of your A/C system be completed by a certified HVAC or other cooling specialist. Some of the main things they should do in this annual service include, but are not limited to, the following:
1) Inspecting condensation drains & thermostats.
2) Checking the air temperature splits.
3) Inspecting the compressor, motors, etc and lubricating where necessary.
4) Checking all operations of your system to the highest efficiency.
5) Checking and/or topping off refrigerant level(s)
6) Checking and/or replacing your air filter(s)

I was just doing a little spring cleaning and this glorious photograph fluttered out from our bookshelf.  I love an unexpected flashback!  For our first wedding anniversary way back in 2010, Sean and I took a nice trip to northern California.  We spent most of our time in San Francisco and Napa eating, drinking and exploring with friends.  It was wonderful.  Apparently we spent most of our first year of marriage eating and drinking in wedded bliss too!  This photo and our chubby cheeks are evidence of that.  I also remember us eating lots of Chinese food in bed that year.   But I digress... here we are at Alcatraz!  I highly recommend visiting the island if you have the opportunity.  The boat ride is scenic and fun, the audio tour was fantastic and checking out the island's rock pools and wildlife was great too!  It's supposed to have opened again as of 3/15/21.
