Labor Day is one of the holidays I can really get behind... Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Our friends Josh & Sin are New Yorkers who work hard grindin' in the city all week so that on the weekend they can head north to their CT cabin and blow off some steam. We take advantage of their hospitality and guest room as often as we can. Even though it's still in CT, the northwest corner feels like a real getaway. it takes an hour and a half to get there from here and it's really beautiful out there. A different place with a different pace.
This was my second Labor Day in row celebrated in Sharon, CT and it will definitely not be my last. I can't think of a better place to take a day off and raise a glass to the American worker. Here's to many more good times in the northwest corner, and to Josh & Sin for making it possible! The Windsor Locks Canal State Park Trail runs 4.5 miles along the towpath of the historic Enfield Falls Canal on the Connecticut River from Suffield south to Windsor Locks, Connecticut. A modern paved surface covers the original dirt towpath. Attn: Enfield, Suffield and Windsor Locks residents… Do you even know you have access to this? I have been using the canal path to walk/jog/run for years. I don’t know if it’s me getting older or the nice job the volunteers do down there or a combination of the two but it just seems to get better and better. And now that forest bathing is getting some hype, it seems like a good time to point out that if you wanted to take a quick dip in nature, you don’t have to go far to do it.
Once you’re on the canal path, you’ve got trees and water on both sides and wildlife everywhere. I’ve seen birds from gold finches to blue herons to bald eagles and there’s usually ducks and geese around. What’s cuter than a momma duck swimming will all her baby ducks in a row behind her? There are all kinds of turtles and fish and I’m even a sucker for your basic chipmunk and there are lots of them. Long story short, it’s easy to get to, so go! Take a deep breath, a short stroll and let nature soothe you. |
